A Fine Classical
Mahogany Dressing Table,
North Shore, c.1825

This table is in a fine state of preservation
with acanthus carving reminiscent of the McIntyre
School in the North Shore of Massachusetts. The craftsmanship
is evident throughout and the richness of the mahogany
gives this piece an especial quality. There are many
of these forms, some with spiral legs, some reeded,
some thicker, and some thinner. But, their statuesque
nature of these legs, with reeds, turning, and the
special North Shore Leaf common and often identified
with Salem, and Essex County furniture is clearly
evident. Interestingly, these drawers never had pulls
of handles, and it has been highly French polished
but all above its rich variegated and colored mahogany.
