ITEM SW00153:
A Set of Eight Mahogany Hepplewhite
style Chairs, c.1890

This centennial set of chairs is in
fine condition retaining its original horsehair fabric. While
commonly called Hartford chairs, these were probably manufactured
in Providence and came from a local Providence estate. The modeling
is finely executed and the carving on the splat sharp and crisp.
The mahogany has a warm, faded patina and is its first surface.
This centennial set faithfully reproduces
a popular, well documented form. One example can be found in Furniture
of the Olden Time by Frances Clary Morse. (Click
