ITEM SW01012:
A Diminutive Carved Mahogany
Centennial Chippendale Corner Cupboard, c.1890

This small corner cupboard
is a tour de force of high style Chippendale carving.
Note the magnificent Swan's neck pediment, with carved
rosettes, acanthus carving, shell carving and its
original flame finials. The beveled glass doors are
flanked by quarter columns, and the doors below have
magnificent stylized carved shells typical of those
seen at the end of the 19th century and beginning
of 20th. The interior shelves are also shaped in the
period manner (see
detail). If all of the above is not enough, all
is supported by carved claw and ball feet with shells
at the knees below a strong gadrooned molding (see
detail). All is of solid, dense mahogany with
first rate carving throughout. This is one of the
best centennial casepieces we've seen, and given its
small size, is highly desirable and useful.
