ITEM SW01093:
A Carved Mahogany Sheraton Settee, Salem, c. 1800-1805
attributed to Samuel McIntire

Sofas in this small grouping
are all somewhat different and yet display the same
carved motifs in different combinations. Of the group,
the closest to ours is one illustrated in Levy with
the same central carved crest (click
here for a scan of this item). A much simpler
form, without any crest and turned legs is illustrated
in Sack,
vol. VI, and another even more elaborate is illustrated
in Lockwood.
It is in its original condition, and is a very serviceable
deep sofa. We show it in an open upholstered manner,
without the thick seating and /or back cushion this
sofa would have, to evidence its very clean condition
w/ no breaks et al.

These are very desireable
sofas and are always attributed to Samuel McIntire,
who was known to have made and carved these pieces
in Salem. He was considered one of the finest craftsman
at the time, in New England. In 2008, the Peabody
Essex museum exhibited a show of his work with a publication
of his uvre (see www.pem.org/mcintire).
