ITEM SW01096:
A Carved Mahogany Classical Card Table, New York,
school of Duncan Phyfe, c.1820

This card table is composed
of highly figured flame mahogany veneers throughout.
The top is crossbanded and the apron has a central
panel flanked by two similar panels. The supports
are beautifully splayed acanthus flora, which is a
form rarely seen in New York card tables. Note the
use of gold leafing, which was a costly extra, and
the verdis green paint, which was original. Also,
the rear supports are highly turned and the entire
table rests on gilt and verdis green hairy paw feet,
which are quintessential New York Phyfe school.

This is a fine rare
form that expresses the classical motifs of the time.
