ITEM SW01246:
A Figured Maple 5-drawer
Chippendale Chest, Providence, c.1760,
attributed to Grinnell Rawson

This is a small-scale 5-graduated-drawer
chest, typical of the work coming out of the Rawson
shop in Providence. The shaping of the bracket feet
is their signature and this example shows the beautiful
dovetailing on the feet as well as on the chest top
(see details). Also, note the underneath of the chest,
which is in fine untouched condition. The feet have
excellent height and the general piece has a wonderful
warm glow, which has been polished over through the
years.

Aside from the beautiful
visible dovetailing from top to bottom, the back is
also beautifully chamfered into the case (see below).
Also, the exposed drawer blades also add to a feeling
of thoughtful old-school woodworking, the essence
of a benchmade piece coming out of a small but superior
shop.
