ITEM SW01346:
A Carved Mahogany Chippendale Card Table, with Serpentine
Apron,
England, c.1780
This is one of the finest English card
tables we have handled. The top leaves are beautifully
figured mahogany, the edges of which are superbly
carved. American models of this type were copied in
Newport, and those carved edges never come close to
the degree of craftsmanship shown here. Carving on
edges is extremely difficult, and the work here is
clearly by a master. The apron is serpentine and undulates
on two planes, from the front, and from the bottom.
The figured mahogany is of the best. The legs are
molded with beautifully carved corner blocks. This
table has a very light countenance but is quite heavy
due to the choice of very dense mahogany.
The interior leaves are lined in leather.
This table is in a fine state of preservation with
no repairs or alterations.
