ITEM SW01407:
A Figured Maple Chippendale 6-drawer Dishtop
Tall Chest with Fan on Dovetailed Bracket Feet, Rhode
Island, c.1770
The fan, the dishtop, and the beautifully
bracketed feet set this chest apart from the ordinary,
the fan is a classic Rhode Island form, and here it
is good size and sharp carving. The dishtop is another
added feature highly sought after by collectors. Note
the beautifully figured wood top with the wood grain
swirl and knot. Also, note the dovetails on the ends
of the dishtop which, of course, are the sides of
this piece. With this type of construction, not a
nail is needed and the strength over centuries is
evident. The wood has a beautiful golden brown color
with red overtones. Many of the brasses, we believe
are either original and/or of the period.
Also of note is the beautiful figured
maple which has, through the years, developed an amber
glow. The secondary woods are chestnut, which is typical
of casepieces found in Rhode Island and Southern Connecticut.
