ITEM SW01451:
A Pair of Large Mahogany Classical Card Tables,
Philadelphia, 1830
These card tables are of large scale
and were deaccessioned from the University of Pennsylvania,
where they were used in the Van Pelt Library. They
are quite heavy and substantial with solid mahogany
tops. The table supports are stylized fleur-de-lis
in form (see
detail, it is beautifully developed), and as a
center pedestal table, this size is greatly diminished
given the scale. Whereas most card tables are in the
36 in. range, these are 44.
Pairs are difficult to find and these
are monumental in scale and in a fine state of preservation.
The figured mahogany is exceptional. (See details
below). Also, note the workmanship on the base and
scrolled legs.
Height: 29 1/2 in.
Depth: 21 3/4in. Width: 44in.
