ITEM SW00273:
A Mahogany and
Marble Lyre Side Table, c.1840
This Lyre table retains
its original marble. The lyre is inset with figured mahogany as is the apron above
which surrounds the marble. The base is elegantly detailed and complementary with the
rectangular plinth. It is architecturally pleasing and balances in a complimentary fashion
with the top. The base is finished with elegant scrolled feet, which retain their original
brass casters.
The Lyre form is an important design motif of the early to mid 19th century, and is highly coveted by the collector. Marble tops additionally are extremely
desirable and practical.
