Item sw00430: A Small Rosewood Parlor Organ “Bell, Wood & Co., Ontario”, c.1840

This parlor organ (also called a melodeon) of small scale elegantly supported on four hex-tapered legs ending in turned bell feet.  The case is composed of beautifully figured and exciting rosewood in unblemished condition.  The case has a serrated molding at its base, which is typical of this period, and often seen on Gothic furniture.

The craftsmanship throughout is superb with excellent attention to detail, both in design and execution.  This instrument is in museum quality, probably original finish, and retains all of its original ivory keys.  In its closed position, it creates a finished pier table look, which only reveals itself by its scrolled lyre foot pedal.  For a later related parlor organ illustrating how heavy they ultimately became later in the 19th century.
