Item sw00557: A Monumental Mahogany Bookcase with Drawers, New York, attributed to Meeks, c.1830

This monumental casepiece is often seen in a secretary version, which here is designed with one large drawer beneath two small convex drawers and raised panel doors with stencil work typical of Haines & Holmes, for related examples of this work.  This piece retains its original stenciling, all of which is in perfect condition, above the elaborate glass doors (see detail).  All elements are original including brasses (see detail).  Its size is quite dramatic, and with the upper and lower columns—the former embellished with gilt mounts—makes for an important example of this classical style. Also, we would be remiss if we did not bring attention to the beautifully carved paw feet, which add a feeling to strength considering the monumental nature of the piece they carry (see detail).

Height: 99 in.  Width: 45 1/2 in.  Depth: 23 in.
