These
chairs are full-blown Chippendale style chairs with a level of carving
and form that only the greatest of the period offered.
Note the full carving on the side rails as well as the backsplat
(see detail) and the yoke, which is
dramatically turned upward and also fully carved.
If this weren’t enough, the seat rails on the front and sides
are beautifully scrolled with carving and complemented with carved knees
on the front legs, ending in claw and ball feet (see
detail).
What more could one want in embellishment?
The form is beautifully executed with the rear legs beautifully
splayed out with a small pad foot.
While these chairs are about 30-50 years old, the carving and
craftsmanship are equal to any of the period and the choice of mahogany
is superb. Sets of
twelve including two armchairs are extremely desirable and useful.
The seats have been recently reupholstered with a red damask
material.
