ITEM SW00793:
An inlaid Chippendale
Mahogany Pair of Knife Boxes,
probably American, c.1790

This pair of knife boxes
is in immaculate condition, with all its interior
compartments, locks, silver escutcheons, etc. (see
detail). The mahogany is highly figured and retains
a rich, deep luster that has been French polished.
Many of these knife boxes have had hard lives and
have been altered a repaired through the years. This
one has obviously been very special having survived
as a pair and in absolutely perfect condition with
no alterations or repairs whatsoever. These boxes
are fully developed, and edged with satinwood, and
the inside lid has an early star inlay with rope edging
at the border. The cracks underneath the lids are
age/shrinkage cracks, which is to be expected in a
piece of this age, confirming its legitimacy. These
knife boxes will certainly grace and add to a sideboard.
