ITEM SW00943:
A Figured Maple Oval
Top Tavern Table, Connecticut or Rhode Island
with Splayed Legs, c.1760

This tavern table is a
slight bit larger than the usual form, making it very
practical for two people to have dinner upon. Its
two board maple top is of good figure and the apron
has some tiger maple figuring. The legs are beautifully
turned and of full length. The construction is pegged
in the traditional manner (see
detail). This is a very clean table as far as
its condition, as many of these are subject to harsh
usage and careless repair. The hardwood maple top
is also more desirable than the usual soft pine tops
found on tavern tables. This one has had a good, cared-for
life and has no repairs or alterations whatsoever.
What sets this example apart is the splayed legs which
are rare, and highly desirable.
