ITEM SW00978:
A Pair of Carved Chippendale
(probably Paduk) Claw and Ball Side Chairs, Portuguese
Colonial, c.1780

These chairs are some of
the finest carved Portuguese colonial chairs extant.
Note the strongly shaped front legs, which are profusely
carved at the knees with the English style C-scroll.
Also note the shaped seat apron, which is further
carved. Note the very shapely crook back chair stiles
that conform to one's back, which, of course, are
shaped all of the solid, not bent. Note the carving
on the stile where it meets the seat frame; this is
a feature rarely seen.

The carved splats are also
high style Chippendale which continues through to
the carved crest. These chairs clearly are of the
most desirable style and in superb condition throughout.
Also, note the beautiful cant to the rear legs, which
are shaped and chamfered (see
detail). One chair retains its original leather
seat, and we have had two others made for general
covering and usage (see
details).
Height:
41 in. Seat Height: 18 in. Depth: 15 In. Width: 20 in.
